Twin Cities Democratic Socialists of America hasn't added a story.
As the COVID pandemic rages on, frontline healthcare workers are fighting against both a global pandemic and a profit-driven health care system that has completely abandoned them in a time of dire need. Capitalism has brought about the sad situation where, in the interest of protecting profit margins and the income of their CEOs, hospitals and healthcare facilities are failing to provide many of their workers with adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and a living wage. Furthermore, major PPE manufacturers like 3M and Honeywell are using the Chamber of Commerce to lobby Congress and the President to ensure that the Defense Production Act will never be invoked to fully meet the PPE demand. Hospitals, through the American Hospital Association, have also lobbied our representatives, to block requiring PPE and shield them from liability. Nurses who highlight their unsafe working conditions and assert their needs to hospital administration often face retaliation and the threat of termination; as of writing this, two nurses have been fired raising concerns.
Another tragic yet unsurprising irony of this moment is that, while enduring unrelenting stress, our caregivers lack the time and/or resources to take care of themselves and their bodies. When you’re working 12-14 hour shifts tending to the sick and vulnerable on the frontlines of a pandemic, and not making a living wage, it can be difficult and exhausting to procure and prepare nutritious foods that can sustain you and your family.
In the absence of leadership from governments and the private sector in the areas of food and PPE, Twin Cities DSA is stepping up to help meet the needs of healthcare workers during a profound crisis of capitalism. The goal of this fundraiser is to both feed and protect our healthcare workers by providing them with organic locally-grown food and PPE as an act of solidarity. All food and PPE purchased with these funds will be distributed to health care workers in Minnesota. If you are in the Twin Cities area and would like to assist with distribution, please sign-up on this linked form.
Note: The initial $5,000 raised will go to food security. If we are able to raise enough money to place a minimum order with a manufacturer for N-95 masks, we will do so as long as extreme price gouging isn’t occurring. If we are unable to place an order for N-95 masks, the remaining funds will go toward additional food security for the workers.
