FORT MCMURRAY HERITAGE SOCIETY hasn't added a story.
Dear Friends,
As you all know, the city of Fort McMurray has been devastated by a terrible wildfire. This fire has forced people from the community they live in and cherish.
A community that has been so profoundly devastated needs to find a way to rebuild its history and heritage, so the impact of this fire doesn’t destroy its past as well as its property.
A group of committed individuals has been working to preserve the heritage of Fort McMurray, and were on the cusp of re-opening two destinations that capture the history of the community, when the wildfires arrived.
Now these people and their museums are facing the struggle to rebuild.
By donating to the Fort McMurray Heritage Wildfire Appeal, your funds go to help re-establish the history of the community and support those who have dedicated themselves to preserving the heritage of Fort McMurray and the surrounding areas.
For your donation to the Fort McMurray Heritage Wildfire Appeal, you will receive a tax-deductible donation (for amounts of $50 and more). And 100 per cent of your funds will go directly to the organization in the community striving to preserve the stories and the artifacts of those who helped to establish Fort McMurray.
The Fort McMurray Heritage Wildfire Appeal helps a special group that has been hit by tragedy for a second time in three years.
The Fort McMurray Heritage Society is the proud founder of Heritage Village (formerly Heritage Park) and Heritage Shipyard (formerly Marine Park). These two remarkable destinations showcase a wonderful collection of historical buildings, vessels, large artifacts, archives and smaller artifacts that help tell the story of the people that settled here, created thecommunity and made Fort McMurray the place it is today.
In 2013, Heritage Village was damaged by the rain, snowmelt and floods that impacted many communities in Alberta. Since then, the staff, board of directors, volunteers and many supporters have been tirelessly working to rebuild this historical gem and prepare the site to prevent flooding from happening again. In addition, significant restoration work of the buildings preserved them for generations to come and a new interpretive program was developed with exhibits inside the historical buildings that tell the stories of the women and men who helped to establish Fort McMurray.
After almost three years of dedication, the park recovery and reconstruction work was just a few weeks from completion, and preparation was underway to re-open both of these cultural venues. Then the wildfires arrived, forcing every staff member, volunteer and builder from the site, and again threatening the destination and its artifacts and archives.
With the recent devastation, it is clear that this long awaited re-opening will need to be delayed. It is our understanding that the venues are still standing, however the buildings, artifacts and collections will have suffered serious damage from the smoke and ashes.
Knowing the impact of the fires on the museums is terrible in itself, but the recent events have taken a large toll on the people who have been working so hard to overcome the first challenge and are now heartbroken by a new setback. In addition, the organization's staff, board of directors, volunteers, supporters, friends, and many other project allies have been affected directly, as their homes, personal belongings and so much more have been damaged or destroyed.
This campaign is aimed at helping the people who are directly connected to the Fort McMurray Heritage Society, Heritage Village and Heritage Shipyard. By supporting these individuals and their work, families returning to Fort McMurray will have a focal point to celebrate the tireless spirit of their neighbours, which echoes the perseverance and hard work that was at the heart of founding this community more than a century ago. Together, they will be able to celebrate, discover, learn and play at Heritage Village and Heritage Shipyard, and here, find a part of themselves in the stories of those who came before them.
We would like to send support to help them rebuild and find a way to overcome this adversity and encourage them to stay strong, as the road ahead will be challenging.
Please consider contributing to support this admirable group of people in whatever capacity you feel comfortable. Funds raised by this campaign will go directly to the Fort McMurray Heritage Society. Contributions of $50 and more will receive a tax receipt. I thank you for any support you can offer.
Donations of $100 and more will received a Fort McMurray Hertiage Rebuild limited edition T-shirt. (Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery).
