Robert Clark hasn't added a story.
I have been passionate about Clemson University since I was a small boy. My parents are graduates (1974) and we attended many football games when I was growing up. My uncle parked at the corner on the lawn at Littlejohn, diagonally across from the west end of the stadium. The kids rode on pieces of cardboard down the hill into what is now the IPTAY parking lot. I am part of a family where my cousins and aunts are Tigers, too. To me Clemson has always been a part of my family even before people started calling it the "Clemson Family."
Just like my parents I went to college, tailgated, and earned my
education, loving Clemson at every moment. Now that I'm out of
college, I can devote some time and a little money to do something I
believe in.
After college I wanted to create a Clemson website for
everyone, so I taught myself how to code, etc, and created The Tiger
Fan Forum. While working on this web site, and through contacts I made
while maintaining it, I began to collect Clemson football memorabilia.
I have not had a lot of money so I've bartered and bargained for what
I could not purchase outright. I've also come to realize that many
items that could have been kept have just disappeared over the years.
I think back to the Frank Howard years, and the years when William
Perry and Perry Tuttle played. I wonder how many items from those
years are still around. An important history for Tiger fans! I have
collected items for the mid 1960's to this past season to keep them in
the best condition as possible. I would love to have these items
enjoyed by every Tiger fan. I've found a Brian Dawkins helmet, jerseys
from the '65 and '69 seasons, bowl jerseys, Raymond Priester's record
setting jersey, Centennial uniforms, a 1981 helmet, and other helmets
from 1965 - 2013. I have even taken classes and researched techniques
on how to properly preserve items to keep them from deteriorating and
succumbing to the elements. I have seen great Clemson items destroyed
by rats, UV light, some that were altered by fans, or even just thrown
away because a relative died and relatives did not know what something
was.
Universities with big football programs, such as Alabama,
Auburn and LSU, have a display and/or museum that houses game-used
memorabilia from their football programs. I know that Clemson already
has some display cases, and have some players items, but I'm not just
talking about displaying items. I would like to help actively collect,
clean, restore and preserve these items. Don’t you think it would be
cool if you visited Clemson and were able to see a player's uniform
from the big game we won against FSU, GT, or even a future National
Championship? Or a beat-up lineman's helmet that carries so much character?
For me, and for many other Clemson fans, Clemson football is a
passion. When fans come to Death Valley, they feel it in their hearts.
Their blood runs orange, they are too deep and are all in. I feel
they'd love to see pieces of the great history of their Clemson
Tigers. I have some pieces, and I have restored them. My goal is to
share these things with other fans who bleed orange, too.
*The current goal is to just get us started with the process. The funds will only be used to purchase a small spot downtown to display the items as well as everything needed to purchase items and the tools to restore and preserve them. Every cent will be tracked via excel, and can be viewed by donors upon request. I have set the goal where it is because it would take care of most of the items required to get started and to help with the space to display. If we get enough support, we can start on a full comprehensive museum.
**We are coming up with the following details: 1. Information on other CFB Museums/Sports Museums-Alabama, Auburn, etc. 2. Museum layout/exhibits/space needed; Provide illustrations for donors to view 3. Already acquired items and possible items to be acquired 4. Location (s) 5. Staffing; hours open; free or pay for public 6. Start-up business plan/budget
We also take donations of game used items.
