The Clyde Docks Preservation Initiative Limited hasn't added a story.
The Clyde Docks Preservation Initiative is a non-profit organisation, set up to further the aims of restoring and preserving Govan Graving Docks in Glasgow, Scotland and other maritime sites on the Clyde / Firth of Clyde, as heritage assets for future generations.
The organisation has been set up following a year-long campaign for the restoration of Govan Graving Docks as a shipbuilding heritage park. More than 1,200 people have signed an online petition in support of this. Govan Graving Docks is a category A-listed site and is on the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland.
The Govan Graving Docks were commissioned by James Deas, Chief Engineer of the Clyde Navigation Trust from 1860-1890. Constructed from hand-carved granite, they were the largest dry docks in Britain when built in the late 19th century and were used to maintain hundreds of Clydebuilt ships until closing down in 1987. They have been derelict ever since.
The only remaining historic dock complex remaining on the Upper Clyde, It is now a dilapidated and forlorn looking site - crying out to be brought back to life – much like the river it sits on.
We are committed to ensuring these docks are restored and brought back to use in a way that is sympathetic to their heritage and are respected as a monument to the people who built them and maintained ships in them as well as beneficial to the local community.
Our objective is the restoration of the dry docks to working order and to renovate the only remaining sandstone pump house building as a visitor centre and café. We would like to see one of the dry docks brought back into use for restoration work on historic ships and for building replica boats. They other dry docks could be used for a range of purposes including a permanent berth for a restored ship, a floating bar, office/studio barges, yachts and floating gardens. We also aim to include a nature reserve / ecology park area that would include an eco-tourism lodge accommodation possibly using converted shipping containers.
Govan Graving Docks is surrounded by an area of high youth unemployment. We aim to see a micro-enterprise hub created on the site that will create employment opportunities for 200-300 people as well as volunteering opportunities in areas including tourism, heritage, and skills preservation.
With Clyde shipbuilding potentially on the cusp of a renaissance we also aim to inspire the next generation of shipbuilders.
A heritage park could include space for art installations, street
performers, community/seasonal events, street food, food fairs, etc.
We also aim to work in close collaboration with other organisations
including academia, artists and the organisers of the annual Govan
Fair as well as other maritime preservation groups where there is
scope for mutual support. We are also building a network with industry
specialists in maritime, marine and civil engineering sectors who can
help to deliver our long-term aims.
We need to raise core funding (estimated at £40,000 GBP per year at this stage) to cover our administration costs - including stationery/materials, travel, meeting facilities, research costs, consultation exercises and remuneration for those managing the CDPI projects.
We require a full time project director who will be paid a salary of £15,000 per year to be reviewed later once our organisation is more firmly established.
Since we are a non-profit organisation all of our surplus funds will be reinvested in our projects aimed at protecting the maritime heritage of The Clyde.
