We work with the community of Jiquilillo and surrounding areas to
create and support social and environmental community-based programs,
while providing a sustainable and positive eco-hostel destination for
travelers and volunteers alike.
Jiquilillo faces many challenges: unemployment and dependence on
seasonal work, volatile and persistently low incomes, and a struggling
education system. Environmental challenges abound as well, ranging
from unsustainable resource use to the lack of a waste management system.
We provide the material resources required to update and maintain school infrastructure at Jiquilillo's primary school and the nearest secondary school located eight kilometers away. Some of our more notable prior projects include the installation of a well, latrines, and electricity in the primary school and an update of the electrical system in the secondary school so that a computer lab could be installed. Our future projects for the local primary school include replacing all the doors and fenceline, and we hope to build a playground so the children have a safe and fun place to play. We have also been requested to build extra classrooms at the local secondary school and are hoping to raise enough funds to complete this project by the end of the year.
Although public education is free in Nicaragua, the costs of uniforms, supplies, and transportation are prohibitive. To eliminate this financial obsticle, Rancho Esperanza provides need and merit based school sponsorships for primary and secondary school students. $45 will provide a local primary school student with a uniform and school supplies for the entire year, and $150 will send them to secondary school, including covering their bus transportation fees. With your help, we were able to sponsor 20 students for the 2013 school year, 25 students for the 2014 year. We hope to continue sponsoring these children next year and grow our number of sponsored students.
While formal education is necessary, creativity and an interactive education are never present in the Nicaraguan school system. Rancho Esperanza's Kids Club has been operating daily for ten years to supplement the children's formal school education. We communicate with teachers and parents to determine where extra assistance is necessary and incorporate creative and interactive tools to make learning fun. Friendships and lifelong bonds are made at Rancho Esperanza where local children ages 3-14 engage in teambuilding exercises, outdoor activities, arts and crafts, science experiments, and reading each weekday. In 2012 a lending library was started and everyday the children bring home books to read to their families. Kids Club now has its second generation of kids who are eager to learn and play in a kind, engaging, and fun environment.
Additionally, we facilitate regular beach cleanups and environmental awareness activities through the Surf Club program, where we provide a positive outlet and teach local kids how to surf and repair boards. Local children and adults attend English classes to learn this skill necessary to succeed in the 21st century. Secondary school children also participate in computer classes where we teach basic computer skills and how to conduct research on the internet.
We lend our resources to help in any way we can. Your financial support can help provide a fun and educational atmosphere for Jiquilillo's children. We use volunteer assistance and Rancho Esperanza profits to ensure the ongoing sustainability of our programs. 100% of your donation will be used to directly support our programs. Please email stay@rancho-esperanza.com with any questions or information on how to send monetary or in-kind donations.
