Mark Neuman hasn't added a story.
Hey friends!
Thank you for checking out my fundraising page!
Here's a bit of the backstory: I have known about Aprons for Gloves for a few years, as everybody in the Vancouver service industry has known somebody who took a couple beatings for the cause. When I was approached to compete myself, my first instinct was to say "well, why not?"
I approached my friends who were most likely to talk me out of it, but I was (pleasantly?) surprised that most of them appeared rather enthusiastic about the prospect of me getting beaten up.
And they wouldn't be wrong, I haven't been punched since Grade 6, when Tom Harris decided that instead of moving out of the way so I could stack my chair at the end of the day, he wished to obstinately sit upon the stack of chairs instead. I stacked my chair on top of him and he punched me with the full fury of an 11 year old.
For those keeping count, this event has the potential to bring the total times I have been punched from 1 to a lot.
I have already been punched a few times, mostly by myself as I unsuccessfully attempted to prevent my opponents from approaching so fast. I am not a natural.
This time has allowed me to see what Aprons for Gloves is acheiving in the DTES though, I have been able to watch the free classes offered to at risk youth in one of the most impoverished neighbourhoods in North America. I have seen the comraderie and support offered by the incredible coaches, the nutritious meals, and medical assessments offered, all free of charge.
I am proud of the risk I am taking. It hasn't been easy, and it hasn't always been fun. I go through more ice than most bars. But it's worth it.
Please take the time to donate, as much or as little as you'd like.
Founded in 2012, Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association is a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. The sport of boxing teaches discipline, respect, hard work and self-control. Training results in positive self-esteem, good health and camaraderie for its practitioners.
Restaurant Rumble 2016
Every year bartenders, chefs, dishwaters, servers, baristas and all sorts of individuals from the Gastown community get together to train at the Eastside Boxing Club to fight in Restaurant Rumble.
In order to attend training, each fighter is required to raise $2000 for charity before they can compete at the Rumble.
