Bikes4Ukraine & Urbanism hasn't added a story.
The People of Ukraine Urgently Need Thousands of Bikes
Bikes4Ukraine.org is a Danish non-profit that has been fundraising financial donations in order to send used bikes from Western Europe to Ukrainian cities and towns, where they are veritable lifelines for citizens. The humble bicycle is a vital tool in bombed rural and urban areas, helping people get food, medicine and humanitarian aid, as well as transport to clinics and schools. If you like bikes and bike-friendly cities and want to help Ukraine in the most human way possible, then we would appreciate your financial donation.
The invasion of Ukraine continues and the challenges faced by the people are many. The need for bikes is still MASSIVE so every financial donation helps.

Why Does Ukraine Need Used Bikes?
In countless Ukrainian cities and towns that were bombed, occupied and are generally in ruins, people have issues with basic urban mobility.
Destroyed Roads Many roads, both in rural areas and in cities, have been destroyed by shelling or by military vehicles, making it impossible to drive on. A bicycle can navigate them much more easily and bikes are easy to repair. They are reliable and resilient and adaptable. |
Lack of Transport The Russians destroyed buses and trolleybuses, or the Ukrainian Army uses them to transport troops. In rural areas, people need bicycles to get from towns to cities to access shops, pharmacies or doctors. In cities, people in bombed-out neighborhoods need to get water, food, medicine and humanitarian aid. |
High Gas Prices & Fewer Cars Gas prices fluctuate wildly. Gas is almost as expensive in Ukraine as in the Nordic countries. Also, the gas needs of the Ukrainian Army is a priority. Many cars were destroyed or sent for use on the front lines. |
Internally Displaced Persons In many cities like Lviv, there are many refugees. They left everything behind when they left their homes and a bike is essential to their mobility to the supermarket, doctor, school, job interviews, etc. With our Ukrainian colleagues, we have set up a bike-sharing system in refugee camps. |
Bicycle are Lifelines
Our bikes are a veritable lifeline for many people. Our bikes are used by social workers and volunteers from NGOs in over 35 cities and towns in Ukraine. They are used to deliver food, medicine and humanitarian supplies to vulnerable citizens in the most devasted areas. Bikes can save lives and help make daily life easier for many citizens in Ukraine. You can follow regular updates about our bikes and our work on our Instagram. Mikael Colville-Andersen, founder of Bikes4Ukraine, has been in Ukraine on eight trips totaling more than eleven months since June 2022. He has seen how grateful Ukrainians are to receive the bikes and how useful they are in making life easier in some of the most war-torn parts of the nation. You can read this article of his about The Bicycle as a Vital Tool and Symbol in Times of War & Crisis.
No Upper Limit to How Many Bikes Ukraine Needs
Since July 2022, we have delivered over 900 bikes from Copenhagen, Berlin, Gent and Budapest to over 35 cities and towns in Ukraine. Every single bike is in use daily to deliver food, water, humanitarian aid and medicine to vulnerable citizens in de-occupied areas - including those that are still being shelled by Russia. We now have received appeals from dozens of more cities that desperately need bikes: Lviv, Chernihiv, Bucha, Mykolaiv, Dnipro, Kherson, Kharkiv - and the list goes on. There will be a need for bikes well into the future.
Below you can see volunteers and social workers using our bikes to deliver vital goods to their fellow citizens.
Your
Financial Donation is a Powerful Tool
The fundraising we receive from around the world goes directly to our work in getting used bikes to Ukraine. This includes paying for shipping, logistics and transport of the bikes to cities in Ukraine. It helps us get to Ukraine to deliver the bikes and to pay for the low administrative costs associated with our non-profit. Every little bit helps.
You can follow the delivery of the bikes - thanks to your donation - on our social media and see the people who receive them, how grateful they are and how the bikes are put to good use.

Highlights
See all activity241Donations through crowdfunding are pivotal to our work, of course, but here's a shout-out to some of the people who help us get our bikes to people who need them.
We have recently been added to a website that lists volunteer opportunities in Ukraine - https://www.volunteeringukraine.com/en/volunteer-opportunities/diy-ukraine-diy-ukrayina - and we have been fielding so many emails from people from around the world who want to come and help. Bikes4Ukraine has combined with our Ukrainian urbanism NGO DIY Ukraine and we have an office space to work out of.
We hosted a bike repair event a while back, with Ukrainians and foreigners combining forces to help repair bikes - including the Danish Ambassador and Deputy Ambassador.
Outside of these events, there are also people who are willing to help. Tim, from Germany, has been volunteering in Ukraine for a while and he donated a week of his time to fix up bike donated from Germany.
Until yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting Michael and Sharman from the US for a week and it was an absolute pleasure. Michael (aged 79) is a boat builder and Sharman (aged 72) is a journalist. Michael tirelessly repaired bikes all day while Sharman did her writing at our office desk but also visited other NGOs to help knit camoflague netting for the front lines.
They are an inspiration to us - dedicating their time and energy by coming to Ukraine to do whatever they can do to help. Michael fixed a bunch of bikes during the week, that are now ready to send to our network of NGOs around the country.
So crowdfunding donations from afar are integral - please help us out on that front and spread the word about Bikes4Ukraine - but it never ceases to amaze and inspire us to have people come to Ukraine to work with us. Fixing bikes while air raid sirens wail.
Bikes4Ukraine update
Bikes4Ukraine keeps on going! Here's an update to let you know that our work continues here in Kyiv. We have recently received a shipment of bikes from the town of Archamps in France and the bikes have been distributed to our network in Konotop (Sumy Region), where social workers in rural areas will use them to deliver essential goods to vulnerable citizens who can't make it into town.
Another group of bikes were sent to Kherson - a city under constant threat of missiles and shelling but also drones that the russians use to target civilians. Dozens have been killed and hundreds injured. According to our local network, bikes make it easier to weave through the city and to seek cover - compared to walking or driving a car.
We have recieved 150 bikes from the good people in Braunschweig, Germany. This puts the total number of bikes we've delivered to Ukraine at 1250.
The bikes were collected for Ukrainian refugees at the beginning of the full invasion but the need has dissipated so the bikes were sent to us and we are in the process of repairing them and sending them to our network.
Bikes have been sent to our partners in Chernihiv - the NGO EcoMisto does amazing work. The bikes will also go to social workers for use in delivering essential goods. It never gets old thinking how bikes arrive in Ukraine registered as humanitarian aid - and then end up DELIVERING humanitarian aid. 40% of Ukrainians still need regular aid and our bikes help make it happen - thanks to you.
Chernihiv and Kherson are the cities where we have sent the most bikes. Chernihiv was devastated at the beginning of the full invasion and are trying to rebuild. Kherson is still under constant threat of attack due to its location just across the river from occupied territory.
We still have bikes to fix and we have people in our network in western Europe who are trying to organise more shipments. As you may be aware, support for Ukraine continues to fade with regards to crowdfunding. So if you can help us with donations, we can certainly put them to good and immediate use.
Donate here on the site! And please spread the word.
Thank you for your support in helping us empower Ukrainians with used bikes from western Europe.
Much love and respect from Kyiv,
Mikael and the team.
Bike Shipment coming to Kyiv - can you help us distribute the bikes around Ukrai
Hello all,
Bikes4Ukraine is expecting a shipment of bikes donated by a small French town called Archamps. Amazing! We have been a bit quiet lately because of lack of funds to ship bikes to Ukraine - despite the fact that we can source so many bikes in Europe. So we're excited to get a new shipment and need to promptly distribute them further in Ukraine, to communities in threatened areas like Konotop near Sumy and Kherson in the south.
We are hoping you can help with some funding to enable us to fix some of the bikes that need repairs and to pay for vans to get them to their final destination. We need €1000 to make this happen and we'll go with the bikes to deliver them, despite the threat of missile attacks and shelling.
Even though Bikes4Ukraine has been quiet, rest assured we have been active in other areas with our new NGO DIY Ukraine where we use tactical urbanism and architecture to make Ukrainian cities better.
We hope we can encourage you to help with this shipment. Bikes are still needed so much in Ukraine. Remember, one of our bikes in the course of one year will do the following:
Ride 18,000 km - deliver 12,000 kg of essential goods - help 5000 people.
ONE bike.
Thanks for reading this and thanks for your previous support! You are part of the movement and we appreciate your help.
Best regards,
Mikael and the team
