Heather Mitchell hasn't added a story.
Hey y'all! Heather Mitchell here - an industry vet with 20+ years as a bartender, server, dining room manager, sommelier, wine store person, etc, etc, etc. I'm "Team Gnocchi" because, much like gnocchi, I am a fluffy potato pillow of love. Besides, everyone loves gnocchi! I've been a fan of Aprons for Gloves since year one, and I'm FINALLY able to participate in the Restaurant Rumble.
Aprons for Gloves is a non-profit organization based out of the Eastside Boxing Club. This year alone, 67 kids have been introduced to the sport of boxing through ESB's programs. It isn't just sport, though--children and youth who participate also have access to medical and nutritional programs, and one-on-one support from peer youth workers from Britannia's Youth Engagement Project and the Network of Inner City Community Service Society.
I'm participating in Aprons for Gloves because I truly believe that one of the best things you can do for at-risk youth is get them involved in athletics. Sport teaches us self-reliance and self-discipline, how to push ourselves harder than we thought we could, and how to rely on our team when things get tough. The mentorship provided by ESB's volunteer coaches provides kids a safe space to learn, to challenge themselves, to trust in their own abilities, to celebrate their triumphs, and to undertand that everyone fails sometimes - as long as you don't give up on yourself, you'll be ok.
My goal is to raise at least $2000 to support Eastside Boxing Club's youth engagement programs. All funds raised go directly to ESB. This year, part of the proceeds will help to renovate a room in the gym so that kids will have a place to do their homework and get tutoring and study help.
My part in this process is simple: Train as hard as possible for the next three months. Don't quit.
Your part is simple, too: Give me your money. Click the link to make a donation, and keep an eye out for Apron For Gloves fundraisers around town.
Your money and my sweat might just get me to Fight Night - July 27 at the Commodore Ballroom!
Thank you for your support of this organization!
Founded in 2012, Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association is a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. The sport of boxing teaches discipline, respect, hard work and self-control. Training results in positive self-esteem, good health and camaraderie for its practitioners.
Restaurant Rumble 2016
Every year bartenders, chefs, dishwaters, servers, baristas and all sorts of individuals from the Gastown community get together to train at the Eastside Boxing Club to fight in Restaurant Rumble.
In order to attend training, each fighter is required to raise $2000 for charity before they can compete at the Rumble.
