James Tichenor hasn't added a story.
I've come to boxing in my mid-life. Some might say this is a symptom of a crisis and some might be right. But guess what: I'm stronger, healthier and happier than I've been in years, thanks to the Eastside Boxing Club. So it makes sense that I volunteer my time and (hopefully not too much) blood, (an essessive amount of) sweat and (trainer induced, pain infused) tears to the Aprons campaign.
I love the idea of getting in the ring and fighting out three rounds with one of my fellow Apron's contenders, so much so that I'm going to train upwards of ten hours a week for the next three months just so that I can give everyone in the Commodore audience on July 27 a great and entertaining night. We're doing this not only for ourselves and our own personal goals, but more importantly for the kids who don't have the luxury to stroll into a boxing gym and buy a monthly membership. There was a time, way back in the old days, when many kids got the opportunity to learn the sweet science, back when everyone loved and watched boxing. It wasn't about learning how to fight in the streets, although what they learned did save them in some tough situations. It was about learning discipline and perseverance, about learning how to build inner and outer strength, to fight through aversion.
Boxing is a metaphor for life. Plus it's a damn fine sport.
Please donate what you can to my campaign. All the cliches about every dollar helping are true. Of course I'm doing this for myself, to make myself better, to challenge and grow, but really I'm doing this a kid or two can get the chance to do the same for themselves, to build their mind and body. To build confidence. And maybe they'll go somewhere in the sport. That would be the most wicked result of all: a young kid from Vancouver, given the chance to become great in one of our greatest, most essential, truest sports.
That's definitely worth a small donation, isn't it?
Founded in 2012, Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association is a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. The sport of boxing teaches discipline, respect, hard work and self-control. Training results in positive self-esteem, good health and camaraderie for its practitioners.
Restaurant Rumble 2016
Every year bartenders, chefs, dishwaters, servers, baristas and all sorts of individuals from the Gastown community get together to train at the Eastside Boxing Club to fight in Restaurant Rumble.
In order to attend training, each fighter is required to raise $2000 for charity before they can compete at the Rumble.
