Team Stringer hasn't added a story.
Hi Guys I am certain all know me by now but those of you that don’t, I am simon Stringer, normal guy from a small town in Northamptonshire now living in Vancouver, Canada. I have always supported friends and family with various fund raising efforts but never had a cause that meant something to me.
Last year I was introduced to a boxing club in Vancouver and it opened my eyes. I have always thought that boxing was a good thing for young kids regardless of their background, it installs so many values that help people succeed in life.
Eastside Boxing goes one step beyond most boxing clubs i have come across, they work in partnership with the local agencies and organizations to allow young kids to be introduced to boxing.
One of the ways they can afford to offer this is through events like the restaurant rumble or Aprons for gloves as it is also known. This is how I wish to help....
I am going to put myself through 12 weeks of hard training that will include blood (yes mine) sweat and tears, this is a journey i will go through with many other potential competitors all of us striving to be selected for the main event on 27th July at one of Vancouver’s most prestigious venues, The Commodore Ballroom.
A little more about the Cause:
Eastside Boxing Club Built By the Community, For the Community. It has been an insanely positive and busy eight months since Eastside Boxing Club successfully reopened doors at 238 Keefer Street. Since September our team has, figuratively and literally, hit the ground running. We have hosted two fight nights at Eastside, giving us the opportunity to showcase a number of our fighters and introduce other fighters and coaches from all over British Columbia to our gym and to our cause. As I am sure you can imagine, they were stoked! So much so, that we were awarded 2015’s Combsport Club of the Year!
ESB in the community:
The interest and support of our cause has been nothing less than overwhelming. Since September we have partnered with several different community organizations and agencies – together we have introduced 67 at-risk youth and children to the sport of boxing. These partnerships have allowed us to create a supportive environment here at ESB where children and youth have access to nutritious food, medical assessments and one-on-one support from partnering youth workers from Network of Inner City Community Service Society (NICCSS) and Britannia’s Youth Engagement
Project. Youth Programs Community Partner
Who: NICCSS Vancouver Roving Leaders Program http://www.niccss.ca/progamsampworkshops/vancouverrovingleaders
The Vancouver Roving Leaders Program is a flexible, community based initiative that connects and engages vulnerable, at-risk children & youth in the Grandview, Woodlands, Hastings, Sunrise, Renfrew, Collingwood and Downtown Eastside neighbourhoods. The Roving Leaders Program is about active connection and inclusion of our children and youth. We focus on connecting with the children and youth where they are, building a relationship and then helping them to integrate into neighbourhood programs, services and education opportunities. The Roving Leader is a community youth worker who works outside the walls and boundaries of the traditional youth work or recreation setting. The Roving Leaders are flexible, provide outreach to the community and connect with children where they are: on the street, in the park, with their peers. They involve children (primarily 10 to 16 years old) in positive activities, breaking down barriers they may face in accessing programs or services in their community and developing their strengths, talents and interests. How We Help: ESB runs a free after school boxing program 3 times a week. This program is facilitated by head coach Dave Shuck and other ESB boxer mentors. ESB works with NICCSS case workers to help introduce youth participants to exercise and a variety of life skills through mentorship and relationship building
HELP:
This is where I need YOU, I need to raise $2000 in order to be able to compete, this does not guarantee me a fight on the main event but it will enable me to fight at some point meaning all the money will go to a great cause and help a club I have become very fond of.
If at any point I have ever....
· Pissed you off (donate to help someone punch me)
· Taken the piss out of you (see above)
· Helped and supported you for any fund raising events ever (a little help in return would be very much appreciated)
If you earn English ££££ your donation will go a long way with the help of the exchange rate :-)
Really by supporting me on this journey you can not lose, someone will punch me and you will get to see the pictures and the video, or you will get the warm fuzzy feeling of helping a great cause and supporting a friend.
I am really not very good at this Boxing thing (6ft4 with legs like Bambi doesnt bode well) but the guys at ESB are dam good at supporting the community and enabling opportunities for at-risk youths and that is worth putting myself through this.
Please watch the videos to get an idea for yourself.
Thank you for reading.

Founded in 2012, Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association is a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. The sport of boxing teaches discipline, respect, hard work and self-control. Training results in positive self-esteem, good health and camaraderie for its practitioners.
Restaurant Rumble 2016
Every year bartenders, chefs, dishwaters, servers, baristas and all sorts of individuals from the Gastown community get together to train at the Eastside Boxing Club to fight in Restaurant Rumble.
In order to attend training, each fighter is required to raise $2000 for charity before they can compete at the Rumble.
