Megan Lifto, DNP, MS, APRN, AGCNS-BC, PHN, ACHPN hasn't added a story.
Eleven years ago, I changed careers from an Assistant Professor of Anatomy & Physiology at a community college to an Oncology Registered Nurse (RN) at a large hospital. Some of my closest family members needed cancer treatment, and their oncology nurses were compassionate, resourceful, and a healing presence. I was inspired to become an oncology nurse to give back and help others affected by cancer.
As an oncology nurse, I received an all-day training and witnessed the *magic* of palliative care. A patient's quality of life significantly improved with effective pain and symptom management. When patients were at end of life, it was an honor & privilege to provide comfort care and allow a peaceful & dignified death. These life-changing experiences were a divine calling to become a Palliative Care Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
As a Palliative Care APRN, I worked at an acute care hospital and long-term acute care hospital. At both hospitals, numerous barriers kept many patients from dying comfortable. Despite patients suffering with pain, air hunger, anxiety, etc. and/or having a completed health care directive stating pain relief most important, even if it shortened length of life and time with their family.
Also troubling were nurses hesitant/reluctant to give comfort medications, doctors discontinued comfort medication, families adamantly refused comfort medications, and MANY other reasons. I surveyed the long-term acute care nurses and they shared feeling unprepared and uncomfortable providing end of life care. They received little to no education on hospice and palliative care in nursing school and no on-the-job training,
With my teaching expertise and strong passion for palliative care, I was called to train & mentor nurses -in all healthcare settings- on palliative care skills and knowledge. With our fast-growing population of aging adults and elderly with serious illness/ chronic health conditions, nurses need to be prepared to provide palliative care. Many comfort measures are within a nurse's scope of practice, meaning a doctor's order is not needed.
I'm creating a Comfort Care Champion mentoring program to inform, empower & prepare nurses to serve as Comfort Care Champions at their workplace. As a train-the-trainer program, nurses will train their fellow coworkers on essential palliative care skills and knowledge.
I joined the Nurses Business Incubator program to learn how to start an online education business. With your donation, I'll be able to effectively market my program for maximum reach, & develop a sustainable palliative care nurse education business. Thank you for your time and consideration. Many blessings for peace, joy and comfort.

WHAT IS "NEW DIRECTIONS FOR NURSES"?
New Directions for Nurses is the primary project of Awakening to Grace, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
We teach nurses how to start and grow successful businesses from their education, empathy, and passion for service.
- Entrepreneurial nurses need business education that is targeted specifically to their mindset, ethics, and experience because nurses typically think and act differently than the predominant business culture does.
- We would like to see nurses appreciating the value of their ideas and learning the best paths to developing them rather than giving their ideas to other companies to profit from.
We believe that if more nurses learn how to start and grow successful businesses, they will contribute to the common good in new and effective ways. As a result, nurses will develop more professional autonomy and the public will benefit from that power shift.
BUSINESS EDUCATION DESIGNED BY NURSES, FOR NURSES
The Nurses Business Incubator is an online business education system that helps nurses imagine, test, and validate their power to develop effective health care programs and services.
- Our tuition cost is in line with the average for quality specialized business education.
-
Many nurses can afford to pay the Incubator tuition in full,
but some equally dedicated nurses need help.
- One of our core values is accessibility, so we offer a work-study system in which nurses can earn up to 75% of their tuition through participating in fundraising and mentoring newer members of the Incubator when they have the skills to do so. After the fundraising ends, work-study scholarship recipients can pay the balance of their tuition and start their education or they can fundraise again in the next round.
- Our work-study system creates a culture of caring that strengthens the Incubator community and the participants' buy-in, action-taking, and integration of core skills that are needed to start a business.
Your donations provide the funds for our work-study system to operate.
