The Well Project, Inc. A Not For Profit Organization hasn't added a story.
With just a few days left in 2015, there’s still time to consider making a year-end gift and have your donation doubled by our matching program. Please help us make the most of this amazing opportunity and significantly increase our impact!
When Tiommi learned of her HIV diagnosis in 2012, she made a promise to God that night. She refused to let HIV put her back in the closet, and vowed to become an HIV advocate raising awareness everywhere she could. Today, she is one of the fiercest and most vocal HIV prevention advocates in the country.
As an African-American transgender woman who is open about her HIV status and living in the South, Tiommi is no stranger to adversity and stigma. Local resources about HIV tailored to transgender women, much less women in general, are scarce. Community spaces friendly to people living with HIV or LGBT of color are also hard to come by in Arkansas. With the odds stacked against her, Tiommi refused to let these barriers stop her.
"The Well Project has given me a place where I can feel welcomed. It offers me a place to be myself and not worry about how others are seeing me. It has welcomed me into a family of women who are empowered and know their self-worth. It gives me a voice to speak for the voiceless."
This year, Tiommi joined The Well Project’s Community Advisory Board, and became an avid blogger on A Girl Like Me. We are so grateful Tiommi has become such a strong voice and important member of our community, and provides invaluable insight to how we can better address issues facing the transgender community. And with The Well Project’s wealth of information on women and HIV, Tiommi found the knowledge she sought to make decisions about her health as well as educate others. She also found a supportive, welcoming community of women who serve as a lifeline and can identify with the unique struggles she’s faced.
The rates of HIV infection among transgender women are alarming—almost 50 times as high as for other adults of reproductive age. Transgender women also encounter an extreme amount of violence: this year alone, more than 20 transgender women were victims of fatal violence. For both these reasons, Tiommi’s voice and advocacy is extremely important, but increases the adversity she faces in her daily life. However, she is committed to educating others, on both the community and national level, including speaking on the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, and shows no sign of slowing down.
Tiommi realizes the incredible impact of being visible and sharing her story with others. She is deeply motivated to touch the lives of other transgender woman living with HIV who may feel hopeless and voiceless in their situation. The Well Project provides her with a powerful platform to share her inspirational message near and far.
Encouraged by Tiommi’s resiliency and drive, we aim to lift up other women’s voices to make sure transgender women continue to be represented and feel supported in the important work we do.
Help us lift up more women’s voices and empower them to inspire others.
Make a special gift today to The Well Project and a donor, just like you, will match any donation between now and December 31.
Even a small contribution from you can go a long way to help us with our goal to enable many other women, like Tiommi, to make a difference in their communities, nationally, and globally all year long.
Please take advantage of this matching gift opportunity and consider making a $10, $25, $50 or more tax-deductible gift today.
About the Well Project
The Well Project is a non-profit organization whose mission is to change the course of the HIV/AIDS pandemic through a unique and comprehensive focus on women and girls. The Well Project leverages technology to improve health outcomes and increase quality of life for women and girls living with HIV. Since its founding, The Well Project has established itself as the premier online resource on women and HIV, both nationally and globally, directly reaching more than 1 million users each year. In the more than 13 years that we have been in operation, the evolution of technology and emerging ways that people access information and connect with each other via social networking has not only dramatically increased the reach of The Well Project’s resources, but has also exponentially expanded our impact.
